The Supreme Court decision of June 26, 2015, Obergefell v. Hodges, does not change the undeniable, God-given truth that marriage is between a man and a woman.
The issue the Supreme Court attempted to settle is not an issue regarding the civil rights of any particular group. In fact, the Catholic Church does not advocate the mistreatment or abuse of any individual or group, including those of same sex attraction. Instead, this is an issue about upholding what the Catholic Church believes is defined by God, regarding the institution of marriage itself.

The Diocese of Victoria in Texas firmly believes we cannot alter, either legislatively, judicially or by cultural demand, what God has given to humankind for the good of all. God’s truth cannot be redefined or changed.

Again, the Catholic Church does not seek to exclude any individual or group. Christ came for the salvation of all, but the Church equally believes Christ does not offer us a truth which can be altered any time and in any way we find it expedient to do so.

Therefore, the Diocese of Victoria concurs with the statement of Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, who has stated:

“Regardless of what a narrow majority of the Supreme Court may declare at this moment in history, the nature of the human person and marriage remains unchanged and unchangeable. Just as Roe v. Wade did not settle the question of abortion over forty years ago, Obergefell v. Hodges does not settle the question of marriage today. Neither decision is rooted in the truth, and as a result, both will eventually fail. Today the Court is wrong again. It is profoundly immoral and unjust for the government to declare that two people of the same sex can constitute a marriage.”
